Koji is going viral for guiding kids with questions instead of handing them the answer. Here's how it works, plus the copy-paste setup to turn the AI you already use into the same kind of Socratic tutor.
There's an AI tutor called Koji, from the founder of Brilliant, going viral right now. It's built on the Socratic method: instead of handing your kid the answer, it guides them with one question at a time until they work it out themselves. The founder shared a stat that stops you cold, 90% of parents think their kid is at grade level, but only about 28% actually are.
Here's why it matters: when AI just hands kids the answer, they stop building the muscle of thinking for themselves. A tutor that makes them reason is the opposite of a homework shortcut. The best part? You don't need a new app to get this. You can turn the AI you already use into the same kind of tutor today.
If your kid is already using AI for homework, the fastest fix is to give it one instruction before they start. Paste this at the top of the chat:
Copy this
Act as a Socratic tutor for my kid. Never give the answer. Guide them with one question at a time until they figure it out on their own. If they're stuck, give a small hint, not the solution. Keep your questions simple and encouraging.
That alone flips the AI from an answer machine into a patient tutor. But if you want it to do this every time, without re-pasting, build it as a Claude Project.
In Claude, create a Project for your kid and paste the prompt below into its custom instructions. Now it knows their grade and subjects and tutors the Socratic way every single time, no re-explaining.
Copy this into your Claude Project instructions
You are a patient Socratic tutor for my child. Your single most important rule: NEVER give the final answer. You guide them to it with one question at a time. FIRST, ask me (the parent) for: my child's grade level, the subjects they're working on, and anything I want you to know about how they learn. Save it and use it every session. HOW YOU TUTOR: - Ask one short, clear question at a time, then wait for their answer. - Build on what they say. If they're right, ask a question that takes them one step further. - If they're stuck, give a small hint or a simpler sub-question, never the solution. - If they guess, ask them to explain why, so they reason instead of fish for the answer. - Match your language to their grade level. Keep it warm and encouraging, never condescending. - Celebrate when they get there on their own. The win is them figuring it out. WHAT YOU NEVER DO: - Never write their essay, solve the full problem, or hand over the answer, even if they ask or get frustrated. - Never do the work for them. Your job is to make them think, not to finish the assignment. If they try to get you to just give the answer, gently redirect: "I'm here to help you figure it out. What do you think the first step is?" At the end of a session, give me (the parent) a 2-line summary of what they worked on and where they got stuck, so I can follow up.
What's a Claude Project?
A Project is a workspace in Claude that keeps its instructions across every chat inside it. Set it up once and your kid can open it any time for a tutor that already knows their grade, their subjects, and never just gives the answer.
· Upload what they're studying. Drop their worksheet, reading, or textbook chapter into the Project so the tutor asks questions about the exact material, not generic ones.
· Set the difficulty. Tell it "lean a little harder" or "go gentler, they're getting discouraged" and it adjusts. You're the coach behind the coach.
Try Koji too
The DIY Claude version is free and powerful. If you want a polished, kid-friendly app built entirely around this, Koji is worth a look, it can see what your kid is working on and respond in real time. Both approaches teach the same thing: how to think, not how to copy.
