The 5 Levels
of AI-Pilled

OnlyCFO broke AI users into 5 levels and most people self-rank way higher than where they actually are. Here is the honest ladder, the gap between each rung, and the one move that gets you to the next level.

The Source

The original 5-level framework is from OnlyCFO. He wrote it for executives wondering if their team is actually AI-pilled or just nodding through meetings. I am extending it for the rest of us: founders, creators, employees, anyone trying to figure out how cooked they are.

Read it honestly. Most people will be one level lower than they think.

Level 1 The Prompt Guy / Girl

01

The Prompt Guy / Girl

You ask AI one-off questions. Draft this email. Summarize this PDF. Brainstorm 5 angles. AI feels magical, but your actual work has not changed. You still pull up ChatGPT like it is Google.

The move to Level 2

Save 5 prompts you reused this month into a "favorites" doc. Anywhere is fine, Notion, Apple Notes, a Claude Project. The act of saving is the level-up.

Level 2 The Magician

02

The Magician

You have a few saved prompts and Claude Skills you reuse every week. You are meaningfully more efficient as an individual, but nothing about your team or company has changed.

The move to Level 3

Pick ONE recurring task that takes you more than an hour a week. Build a full project or workflow around it. A weekly content brief, a Monday morning brief, a sales outreach pipeline. Once one task is fully systematized, you are Level 3 for that workflow.

Level 3 The Power User

03

The Power User

You have built projects and workflows that handle whole tasks for you. Drafting briefs, processing customer feedback, building reports. This is the stage where, around the office, people start asking whether they really need the next hire.

The move to Level 4

Connect your tools. The gap between Level 3 and Level 4 is whether the AI runs on its own or whether you have to babysit every step. Connect Gmail, Drive, your CRM, your spreadsheets. Set up a scheduled task or a Cowork agent. The moment something runs without you opening a chat, you have moved up.

Level 4 The Builder

04

The Builder

Your core systems are connected to AI and agents run large parts of your job in the background. Your role looks completely different than it did six months ago. You are managing AI as much as you are managing humans.

The move to Level 5

Stop treating it like a finished system. Block 30 minutes every Friday to ask: what did I do this week that an agent could have done? Rebuild one process every month. The people at Level 5 are not smarter, they are just willing to throw last quarter's setup in the trash and build a better one.

Level 5 Creative Mode

05

Creative Mode

This is the level where your friends are genuinely concerned about you. You are constantly rebuilding how you work as AI evolves. You are spotting new applications before they are obvious. You are in god mode, unlocking new learnings left and right.

The move to staying here

Teach. The Level 5 trap is hoarding. The way to stay sharp is to teach what you know, get pushback, rebuild. Start a Slack with 5 friends, post on LinkedIn weekly, run a small workshop. Teaching forces you to articulate the why, and that is where the next layer of insight lives.

Reality Check The Honest Self-Assessment

Quick gut check. Pick the closest match.

Level 1

I use AI when I think about it. I do not have prompts saved anywhere. My usage this week was under 10 chats.

Level 2

I have a few favorite prompts I reuse. I would notice if AI broke for a day. My team is mostly NOT doing what I am doing.

Level 3

There are at least 2-3 tasks I no longer do manually. I have a couple of Claude Projects set up. I think about staffing differently than I did 6 months ago.

Level 4

Things run in the background without me. I review agent outputs more than I create them. My job description from a year ago no longer matches my actual job.

Level 5

I rebuild my systems monthly. I am the person friends call when their AI setup is not working. My partner has asked me to "stop talking about AI at dinner."

The Real Win

The goal is not to hit Level 5 tomorrow. The goal is to know where you actually are (honestly) and to climb ONE level at a time. The people who are about to widen the gap are the ones who pick a level and do the next-rung move this week.
